Episode 23 - How to Run a Company With Your Significant Other

Are you and your significant other partners in both life and business? Today I’d like to share some insight on how to make this arrangement successful.

How do you set expectations up front when you’re running a company with your significant other? What’s the best way to make sure you “stay in your lane?”

This is a topic that hasn’t received a lot of attention within the media channels we all consume. And as someone whose life partner and business partner are one in the same, I’d like to share my experience with this situation. Ultimately, my goal is to make this topic an ongoing point of discussion. I hope that by doing so, others in this same position will learn how to address and overcome the unique challenges associated with this arrangement.

Using your strengths as a guideline by which to assign individual duties within the company is key to facilitating a successful work/life balance.

Something Lisa and I talked about right away when we began our company in 2016 was how to balance our individual roles. We wanted to put an emphasis on supporting each other and working collaboratively without overstepping our bounds or infringing upon one another’s autonomy.

A lot of the friction that can result from sharing a business with the person you go home to every night comes from not having clearly defined roles and responsibilities. Therefore, determining what each person’s strengths are, and using those strengths as a guideline by which to assign individual duties within the company, is key to facilitating a successful work/life balance.

Giving each other the space to flourish within your specific roles will allow for a more fruitful partnership.
